Over the years in F1, we have seen many different car designs and tendencies. Here are a few of my favorites. I picked some of these because I like the way they look or sound, and some of them because they had great performance and dominated the competition.
Ferrari 312T4 –
This Ferrari was from 1979, and used ground effects aerodynamics to bring Ferrari 6 wins and a Constructor’s Championship, along with Jodi Scheckter’s only Driver’s Championship. It is a beautiful car with advanced aerodynamics for the time. The silver, protruding front and rear wings add to the beauty of the narrow chassis.
Brabham BT52 –
This Brabham was a successful racing car from the turbo era of F1. In 1983, it was piloted by Nelson Piquet to become the first ever turbocharged F1 car to win the driver’s championship. Piquet won three races with this gorgeous car. It’s unique dart-shaped profile and angular shapes make this car add to the aggressive attitude of the car. The looks combined with the turbocharged engine roar make this chassis one of the most intimidating F1 cars ever.
Red Bull RB7 –
The Red Bull RB7 is the 2011 entry from the Energy Drinks- backed team. This car has dominated the competition so far. It has sat on pole position at each race so far, and defending champion Sebastian Vettel has been able to take it to 6 victories out of 8 so far on the season. Although it is not the best looking car, rarely does an F1 car dominate it’s rivals as convincingly as the Newey-designed RB7 does.
Lotus Renault R31 –
In my opinion, this car is by far the best looking modern F1 car. It’s classic Lotus black and gold livery with it’s high, skinny nose make this car beautiful to look at. Also, with it’s blown exhaust, the R31 is by far the best sounding car on the 2011 grid as well. It is very competitive, and could be a stepping stone for Renault as they try to get their name back to the top of the list.
Ferrari 641 –
You can see in the background of this website the Ferrari 641. This is the most beautiful F1 car in the history of the sport in my opinion. Everything about it, the suspension, the tall sidepods, the black wings, they’re all stunning. Alain Prost and Nigel Mansell took this car to 2nd in the Constructors Championship. The car won 6 out of 16 races, and Ferrari just missed out on the 1990 title.
